VeraCrypt is an encryption software that enables you to create encrypted containers to store your sensitive files and documents. An encrypted container file can be stored anywhere on your computer or and external media and mounted as a virtual drive that can be accessed via a regular drive letter.
Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted and unlocked with the correct password or key.
In addition to creating secure storage containers, the software can also be used to encrypt an entire system partition or drive.
VeraCrypt supports a variety of encryption algorithms, including AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. Other features include support for FAT32 or NTFS formatting, hidden volumes, hotkeys for mounting/dismounting and several other advanced features.
VeraCrypt can be installed in portable mode unless you want to encrypt your system partitions.
VeraCrypt is based on the (discontinued) TrueCrypt open source project and offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format.
